Artist's statement:
My practice reflects on an interest in perceived differences between a world of objects and their representations. I imagine the painting as a place in which these layered interpretations can converge, exploring what it feels like to look at something in a space and to be looked back at.
I often work quickly, using the paintbrush like a drawing tool, allowing the paint to appear facile and momentary whilst being unavoidably historical. The material presence deliberately undermines the space created: colours and brushwork wrestle for prominence over form. With both clarity and irresolution, the painting seems to look back, asking to be identified.
