It's beginning to look as if Fergus Feehily is shaping up to become one of the most important Irish artists of his generation - if not several.

Recognition has come slowly, although precipitated in the last few years by various honings of style and execution through which Feehily has focused his practice into a precise distillation of quiet contemplation.

Generally small-scale and resolutely intimate, the apparent slightness of Feehily's paintings is countered by the complexities with which they modestly engage.

Formally, much of Feehily's recent practice operates literally on various levels, with sections of plywood, paper or fabric layered together in order to partly obscure, partly reveal.

Discernible themes unite works that are often very different in appearance: abstraction meets figuration; delicacy is countered by abruptness; painting approaches sculpture.

Despite such conflictive (although ultimately enriching) ambiguities, Feehily's practice is underpinned by a beguiling tranquility and absolute lack of pretension.

The fact that his work is capable of generating abundant critical dialogue while still remaining eminently approachable (not to mention beautiful), convinces us that Feehily, in current form, is very much a star in the making.
