Echoing the 17th century Dutch still-life as well as the work of the 19th century symbolists, G L Brierley's paintings are compelling yet darkly repellent; thrusting organisms overlaid with prim incongruities such as details of lace or textiles.
A product both of the semi-accidental and the painstakingly crafted - poured and swirled paint serves as a basis for minute detailing - Brierley's work draws on psychological theory to explore the murk and magic of the libido, the fetishistic and the conflicted self.
