Joel Holmberg's website declaration that he "creates artwork with computers and bare hands" has the ring of a non-sequitur, but in fact, aptly describes a practice which focuses both on multimedia and a more recent concern with hand-made objects coloured with photocopy toner or printer inks.
But that's just one side of the story: Holmberg's body of work is wide-ranging, alternately parodying, referencing, paying homage to and subverting an array of cultures.
These include, of course, established histories of art and their unfolding definition in the digital age, as well as far more recent agglomerations of community typical of the Web: online forums, digitised self-publishing and the virtual artists' shop, for example.
