Often described as 'minimal encounters' or 'drawings in space', Masterton manipulates materials including text, dance and basic interaction with sculptural elements through the pairing of conventionally choreographed movement with documentation that dictates the structure of its record as film.

The 2009 work 'Primary Situations Framed', for example, records two dancers performing seminal choreography from Wayne McGregor's ballet 'Entity', using a diagram from the 1958 book 'The Art of Making Dances' to determine the camera's position.
