Long neglected by westerners, African art is finally starting to appear on the international art market, supported by auction houses such as Bonhams and Phillips de Pury; its further emergence seems highly likely.

Since the vast majority of African artists remain little known beyond their home countries and related regions, most are still emerging in a global sense, even if well established at local levels.

Lovemore Kambudzi is a case in point: well-known in his native Zimbabwe, his work has made relatively few international appearances. As a key young African painter, however, he's certainly an artist to watch.

Kambudzi's large canvases teem with local colour and life, carnivalesque yet critically incisive.

Kambudzi has stated that "Handingavanze chokwadi" (I can't hide the truth), and his work deals with everyday experience from the homely to the harsh.

The economic hardships and scarcity of goods currently faced by most Zimbabweans are no less keenly felt by Kambudzi, who often struggles to purchase paint and other basic art materials. If the quality and complexity of his work vary considerably, this is at least partly a reflection of the realities the artist seeks to depict.
